Morris Library – Microforms (Microfilm no. 3333)

Digital and microfilm copies of the detailed maps made by the Sanborn Map Company. The maps are of the commercial districts of many towns and cities, late 19th and early 20th centuries. The maps are done in great detail, down to individual buildings on specific streets. The maps were used by insurance companies to assess the risks of insuring certain buildings. The microfilm copies are black and white; in the original maps, the color coding represents the building material. There is a checklist of the maps in Fire Insurance Maps in the Library of Congress.

Original color copies are at the Historical Society of Delaware and the Library of Congress.
