What do you do when you find out about a book or article and it is not available at your library?

Use the Interlibrary Loan service (ILL).

Interlibrary Loan is a resource sharing system. People who need materials not available at their library can borrow books or other materials and can receive copies of articles from magazines or journals.

ILL is a cooperative service and operates from library to library. Individuals need to contact their local library to use the service.

University of Delaware

People affiliated with the University of Delaware can use Interlibrary Loan through the UD Library.

Instructions are available on the Interlibrary Loan webpage. You will need to set up your own account to use the service.

What Can Be Borrowed?

Books

Newspapers on microfilm

Books and microfilm are sent through the mail. Remember to allow time for this.

What Can Be Sent Electronically? (Copies of Pages)

Articles from magazines and journals.

Articles from newspapers — if you have the date or page number and if the library that owns it offers this service.

What Cannot Be Borrowed or Copied?

The Libraries that own the items decide if the item is too rare, valuable, or fragile to loan or to photocopy.

The Register of Claims of Delaware Commission contains 114 claims entered before the Delaware Slave Claims Commission in 1864 and 1865. Each claim provides at least the name of the claimant/slave-owner and the name of the slave, providing direct evidence of the final slave-owner of each of the slaves thus claimed. Each entry may include additional information including date and place of enlistment of the slave, events in the processing of the claim, and the amount of award, if any. For rejected claims, one might learn that the claimant was considered disloyal, for example, or that the slave being claimed was not a chattel slave but a free black apprentice. Other information may also be found among the claims. Transcription of records at National Archives.
